Functional And Product Matrix Structure - 1570 Words
If I were on the Dynacorp task force I would suggest that it have a functional/product matrix structure. I also suggest that it rely on Benchmarking, Change Management, Balanced Scorecards and efficient CRM as its alignment mechanisms. Dynacorp has a strong technical focus, targeting a very specific user base. It hit the market when the consumers were anxious for products with high end technological capabilities and innovative product engineering. This proved to be pivotal and a key catalyst for its business and served as an effective market penetration strategy that enabled the company to optimize revenue and profit for many years. However, such a success was realized in the face of very little competition. As soon as the market started offering comparable alternatives, profits started to decrease. Considering the fact that technology is characterized by continuous evolution, short product development life cycle, frequent version revisions and rapid changes in requirements, any sing le organization structure alone will not suffice, and which is why the functional/product matrix must be employed. The functional elements of the matrix will ensure that sufficient domain knowledge is harnessed to fuel technological innovation needed for Dynacorp to gain a strong competitive advantage. The shortcomings of the functional approach will be balanced out by the product centric elements of the matrix.
